John W. Carbaugh, 64, of Harley Road, Seneca, died unexpectedly of natural causes early Tuesday morning, January 17, 2012 at his residence.

Born November 29, 1947 in Oil City, he was the son of the late William C. and Lena Speerstra Carbaugh.

John was a 1966 graduate of Cranberry High School. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served from 1967 until 1969 during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the VFW Post 1835 in Franklin. He also served for many years as a Venango County Fair director.

John was a very friendly and sociable person who had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling a good joke. He was also known for his compassion and desire to help others out whenever he could.

Mr. Carbaugh was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed raising sweet corn on his farm. He enjoyed collecting guns with his father, and recently became very interested in making home-made wine. He was also well known in the area for his deer meat processing shop.

He was employed for many years as a welder for the Boilermakers Union Local # 154 in Pittsburgh. Most recently, he was the owner and operator of Carbaugh’s Family Restaurant in Seneca, and he was enjoying that experience very much.

On March 3, 1976 he married the former Susan J. Cotton in Oil City, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Ben Carbaugh and wife Melinda of Seneca, and Ken Carbaugh, also of Seneca; two daughters, Lisa and her son, and Teresa and her daughter, all of Florida; two grandchildren, Harley Carbaugh and Jersie Porter; a sister, Priscilla Gahring and husband Thomas of Rockland; and two nephews, Scott and Todd Gahring.

John was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends will be received Saturday (Jan. 21st) from 1-4 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, Inc., 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. with the Rev. William Hastings, pastor of Seneca United Methodist Church, officiating.

The VETS Honor Guard will accord military honors at the funeral service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Venango County Fair Directors, 867 Mercer Road, Franklin, PA 16323.

Condolences may be sent to the family on-line by visiting www.hilebest.com

  1. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
