Every coach’s challenge represents a failure in the system. Since the replay official is supposed to review every play and order play stopped on those close enough to review, the red flag should not exist in NCAA football, let alone see the field. Allow a few challenges for coaches being bad at game theory and putting timeouts and their challenge opportunity at risk for a bad challenge, to create a stoppage to freeze the opponent, or to facilitate a tantrum. That leaves nine or 10 system failures*. And those are only the ones that end up being challenged! What of the myriad plays that just go on by, even when the team liking the call on the field doesn’t race to the next snap, without the replay official being sufficiently engaged to stop play?
