Jack R. Nuhfer

Jack R. Nuhfer, 57, of Oil City, died at 1:54 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2012 at UPMC Northwest in Seneca after an extended illness.

Born March 5, 1954 in Oil City, he was the son of Mary Lawerence Nuhfer and the late Robert F. Nuhfer.

He was a 1972 graduate of Rocky Grove High School. He then enlisted in the United States Marines Corps and served during the Vietnam era. He was a radio equipment operator and a guard at the Norfolk Naval Base.

Jack was a member of the Oil City V.F.W., the American Legion, Fryburg Sportsman Club, and the N.R.A.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, guns, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also found joy in attending flea markets and auctions, where he was always able to find some type of treasure to bring home.

Mr. Nuhfer was employed at Foster Forbes Glass Plant in Rouseville until it’s closure. He then worked as a forensic guard for the Warren State Hospital, and retired from there in 2009.

On March 15, 1977, in Oil City, he married the former Debra C. Kelley, who survives.

Also surviving is his mother, Mary Douglas of Cooperstown; three sons, David W. Nuhfer and wife Cyndi of Oil City, Daniel W. Nuhfer and wife Rachel of Cranberry, and Matthew S. Nuhfer and wife Kelly of Oil City; ten grandchildren: Madison, Alexander, Ethan, Luke, Johnathan, Hannah, Dale, Jack, Abigail, and Ella.

Two brothers survive, Robert Nuhfer and wife Robin of Harrisville, and Thomas Nuhfer of Cooperstown; a sister, Rhonda Wiltanger and husband Steve of Cambridge Springs; a step-sister, Patricia Knight of N. Carolina; two step-brothers, Richard Douglas of S. Carolina and Gary Douglas of Ebensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Charles Douglas; grandparents D.A. and Ella Lawerence; and a step-brother Robert Douglas.

Friends will be received Sunday (Feb. 19th) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, Inc., 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township.

Funeral services will be held from the funeral home Monday (Feb. 20th) at 1 p.m. with Rev. Terry L. Truffin, pastor of Oil City Community Alliance Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in Venus Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the VETS Honor Guard of Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cleveland Clinic Oncology Dept., 9500 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44195; or to the Kirtland Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 108, Franklin, PA 16323.
