WVU Wrestlers Defeat Clarion 18-15 on Senior Day

CLARION, Pa. – Clarion’s James Fleming (Sr. West Mifflin) notched his 121st career win and Tyler Bedelyon (Jr. Lewistown) posted a pin but it wasn’t enough as West Virginia rallied to defeat the Golden Eagles 18-15 in NCAA Division I wrestling on Sunday afternoon.

The Senior Day crowd saw Clarion finish the 2013 dual meet season with a record of 5-10, while West Virginia raised its season record to 2-10.

Clarion trailed 6-0 early when Tyler Fraley lost a 3-2 decision to WVU’s Shane Young, and Joe Waltko lost a 3-0 decision to Colin Johnston at 133-pounds.

Clarion rallied back to take a 12-6 lead with wins by Sam Sherlock (So. West Mifflin) at 141, Tyler Bedelyon (Jr. Lewistown) at 149 and James Fleming (Sr. West Mifflin) at 157.

Sherlock got the streak started with a 6-2 win over Sean Fee. Sherlock had a takedown in the first and second periods to earn his 11th win against 10 losses.

Bedelyon notched a fall over Tre Miller-Scott at 149 at 2:53. Trailing 2-1 late in the second, Bedelyon used a cradle for the takedown and the fall to vault Clarion into a 9-6 lead. Bedelyon upped his season record to 18-12.

Fleming, ranked #3 at 157, won a 7-1 decision over Roman Perryman to put the Eagles ahead 12-6. Fleming had two takedowns and a two-point near fall to win his bout. He has a season record of 29-2 and a career record of 121-18. He is tied with Bill “Elbows” Simpson for 10thon the all-time win list. Simpson was a 2-time All-American and NCAA D-I National Champion in 1973 at 167-pounds.

West Virginia came back to take a 15-12 lead when Ross Renzi decisioned Nick Milano (Jr. Erie) 8-4 at 165, Bubba Scheffel decisioned Ryan Darch (So. Batavia, N.Y.) 5-3 at 174 and Lance Bryson decisioned Steven Cressley (Sr. Punxsutawney) 3-0 at 184.

Clarion fought back at 197 when Justin Ortega (Sr. Oxford) decisioned Mark Colabucci 8-3 to tied the team score at 15-15. The win pushed Ortega’s record to 18-11 on the season.

WVU’s Phil Mandzik gave the Mountaineers the team win with a 5-1 decision over Clarion’s Phil Catrucco (Sr. Sharpsville) at 285.

CLARION NOTES: Seven seniors were honored in pre-match ceremonies on Senior Day and those seniors included Trey Hicks (Amityville, N.Y.) at 125, Waltko at 133, Fleming at 157, Dean Moffo (Austintown, Oh.) at 174, Cressley at 184, Ortega at 197 and Catrucco at heavyweight… Clarion will be wresting in the EWL’s, the national qualifier, which will be hosted at Edinboro on Saturday, March 9. … NCAA Division I Nationals are set for Des Moines, Iowa from March 21-23.
