The Wilcoxes Have Big Days But Softball Swept By Seton Hill

wilcoxGREENSBURG, Pa. – Despite a combined 7 of 12 performance by the Wilcox sisters at the plate, the Clarion University softball team dropped a PSAC West doubleheader at Seton Hill Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles lost Game One 4-1 when Seton Hill broke a 1-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, then Clarion lost Game Two 8-5.

In the twinbill, Casey Wilcox, a freshman, was a combined 3-for-4 with a double, two walks and two runs scored, while her older sister, senior Kirsten, went 4-for-8 with a double, triple, an RBI and two runs scored.

Casey was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored and a steal of home in Game One and then drew a pair of walks and scored a run in Game Two.

Kirsten, meanwhile, was 2-for-4 in both games with her double coming in the opener and her triple in the second game when she also drove home a run and scored twice.

Lyndsey Jones had a solid mound performance in the opener pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing four runs, none of them earned, on five hits and a walk. The freshman from nearby New Bethlehem and Redbank Valley High School has allowed just three earned run in her last three outings covering 8 1/3 innings giving up just 10 hits during that span.

Chelsea Zola pitched a 1/3 of an inning of scoreless relief in the opener that saw Clarion (1-14 overall, 0-8 PSAC West) tie the game at one in the top of the sixth when Casey Wilcox led off with a double to right center moved to third on a single to center by Kirsten Wilcox and then stole home plate.

But Seton Hill (16-8, 6-6) took advantage of an error on what should have been a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the sixth to score three unearned runs to retake the lead.

In Game Two, Clarion grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single by Christina Tressler, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the game and a run-scoring double by Taylor Powell, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the contest.

But Seton Hill scored four in the bottom of the first off starter and loser Paige Baker then added another run in the second to take a 5-2 lead.

Clarion, however, fought back with a run in the third on a wild pitch and then tied the contest at five with a pair of runs in the fourth thanks to a Kirsten Wilcox RBI triple and a Tressler run-producing single.

The Griffins, however, retook the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth and then scored single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Shawnna Crago took the loss in relief of Baker going three innings and allowing three run, two earned, on five hits and a walk while striking out one. Baker threw three innings allowing five runs, all earned, on seven hits and a walk.

Clarion returns to action at 2:30 p.m. Friday when it travels to Mercyhurst for a PSAC West doubleheader.
