Clarion U. Softball Swept in Doubleheader at Mercyhurst

clarion-softballERIE, Pa. – The Clarion University softball team was swept Friday in a PSAC West doubleheader at Mercyhurst 7-1 and 9-1 in five innings.

In the first game, Mercyhurst (11-15, 5-5 PSAC West) put a four spot on the board in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.

Clarion (1-16, 0-10) got on the board in the fourth when Lydia Middaugh hit an RBI groundout that scored Christina Tressler to make it a 4-1 game.

But in the sixth, Mercyhurst put the game away when Megan Smith hit a three-run homer to clinch the 7-1 victory.

Shawnna Crago took the loss for Clarion as she went all six innings giving up eight hits, seven runs, six earned, while striking out two. Taylor Powell, Autumn Babcock, and Middaugh each had a hit for the Golden Eagles in the first game.

Annie Truelove got the win for Lakers as she went the distance while striking out five.

In game two, Mercyhurst wasted little time as they scored a combined seven runs in the first two innings for the early lead.

The Golden Eagles got on the board in the fourth when Tressler hit a solo home run for the only Clarion run. Tressler went 2-for-2 in the night cap, 2-for-5 on the day, as she scored the lone run for the Golden Eagles in each ball game. Emily Barber had a double as she went 1-for-2 in the second game.

Chelsea Zola took the loss for Clarion in two innings of work giving up seven runs, five earned, six hits, and one walk. Paige Baker threw two innings in relief as she gave up two runs, one earned, three hits, and struck out two.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday when they will travel to Edinboro for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
