Delval Gem Helps Clarion Baseball Split with Gannon

delvalERIE, Pa. – Tyler Delval threw a seven-hit shutout to help Clarion to a 3-0 Game Two win at Gannon in PSAC West baseball action Friday.

The shutout, Delval’s second in three starts, helped Clarion earn a split of the doubleheader after Gannon won Game One 2-1 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh ruining a strong outing from Brett Whitman, who allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits, a walk and a strikeout.

But Delval helped the Golden Eagles get past the game-one heartbreak striking out seven without issuing a walk, he did hit a batter, in the second game to get Clarion the split.

Clarion’s offense backed Delval up with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

In the fourth, Mitch Holmberg, who was 2-for-2, singled home Tyler Falk, who had doubled — on the double Mike Lockhart was throws out at home trying to score from first. It was one of two hits by Falk in the contest.

Then, in the fifth, Derek Danver delivered a two-out single to score pinch runner John Finke making it 2-0.

Clarion made it 3-0 in the sixth when Holmberg scored on a double by Joey Lopez.

In Game One, Whitman pitched well enough to win but was outdueled by Gannon’s Matt Tobin, who allowed one run on four hits and a walk in getting the complete-game win.

Gannon won the game in the bottom of the seventh when Jeff Bellanca singled home Sean Sutton from second base one out after Clarion rightfielder Joe Holmberg had appeared to save the day with a great diving catch on a ball hit by Jared Wiesen.

Clarion’s lone run came in the top of the first when a base-loaded groundout with no one out by Lockhart scored Josh Ponsell. Clarion then reloaded the bases when Falk was hit by a pitch, but Drew Pirritano grounded into a rally-ending double play to end the inning.

Gannon tied the game in the third on a Bellanca groundout.

Clarion and Gannon meet again Sunday in a doubleheader in Clarion. The games were originally slated for Saturday but were moved Friday to Sunday.
