CLARION, Pa. — Clarion’s Tyler Falk, the PSAC West’s top freshman hitter, was 3-for-6 with a triple and an RBI, but it wasn’t enough for the Golden Eagles who were swept in a Senior Day doubleheader by visiting California (Pa.) Friday.

Falk went 2-for-3 with the run-producing triple in Game Two, a 6-1 Clarion loss, after going 1-for-3 with a single in the first game, which Cal won 6-0.

In the second game, Drew Pirratano (2-for-4) and Joe Holmberg (2-for-4) also had a pair of hits.

But Cal (23-16 overall, 11-11 PSAC West) scored single runs in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings and two runs in the sixth to keep Clarion (7-23, 4-16) at bay.

That was more than enough run production for winner Cory Craig, who scattered nine hits in throwing the complete-game.

Tyler Deval took the loss for Clarion going six innings and allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out two. Senior Sam Skraba went one inning allowing an earned run on a hit and a walk while striking out one.

In the first game, Cal took a 1-0 lead in the first then added three in the fifth and two in the seventh to get the win behind a strong mound performance by Justin Taylor, who threw a complete-game, four-hit shutout while striking out seven.

Senior Brett Whitman was solid for the Golden Eagles going 6 2/3 innings and allowing six runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out two. Fellow senior Ken DiBucci struck out the only batter he faced.

In addition to Falk, Clarion also got hits from Derek Danver, Mike Lockhart and Pirritano.

Clarion returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday against California in Washington, Pa., before returning home to face Slippery Rock in a PSAC West doubleheader at 2 p.m. Monday.

NOTES — In addition to Skraba, DiBucci and Whitman, Clarion also honored seniors Nick Maskrey, Caleb McGary, who are both out for the year with injuries, prior to the first game … Falk came into the doublehitter hitting .341. He is now hitting a team-best .352.
