Falk Stays Hot as Baseball Splits with California

rp_primary_Falk02WASHINGTON, Pa. — Tyler Falk continued his hot hitting going 3-for-6 with four RBIs and a run scored to help Clarion split a PSAC West doubleheader at California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon.

At CONSOL Energy Park in Washington, Pa., Falk went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs in a 6-4 Game One victory before going 1-for-3 with two more RBIs in a 12-5 loss in the nightcap, a game that saw Cal rally from a 5-2 deficit with a 10-spot in the bottom of the sixth.

In Game One, Kane McCall pitched a strong game for Clarion (8-24 overall, 5-17 PSAC West) allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits and three walks while striking out one to improve to 4-3 on the year. Joey Lopez picked up his first save going an inning and allowing a hit and a walk but also inducing a game-ending double play.

A three-run first helped get Clarion off on the right foot, as Falk, Mike Lockhart and Lopez each had RBI singles in the inning.

Then, after Cal (24-17, 12-12) made it 3-2 with two in the bottom of the first, Falk delivered another run-scoring single in the second to push the lead to 4-2 before an RBI triple by Derek Danver followed by a suicide squeeze by Mitch Holmberg pushed the lead to 6-2.

The Vulcans got the two runs back in the bottom of the fifth but left a runner at third in the sixth before having runners at first and second with one out in the seventh prior to Lopez getting the game-ending double play.

Danver (2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run), Lockhart (2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run) and Lopez (2-for-4, 1 RBI) gave Clarion four players with multiple-hit games, while Josh Ponsoll was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

In the second game, the Golden Eagles looked to be in good shape holding a 5-2 lead going to the bottom of the sixth, but Cal sent 13 men to the plate in the bottom of the inning against four Clarion pitchers to take control of the game.

Clarion built the 5-2 lead with a run in the first and two each in the fourth and sixth.

In the first, Lockhart doubled home Drew Pirritano, who had one-out single.

Then in the fourth, Lopez and Ben Thomas both scored when Pirritano reached on an error to give Clarion a 3-0 lead.

Cal came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Clarion got those runs back in the sixth when Falk doubled home both Thomas and Pirritano to make it 5-2.

Pirritano was 2-for-4 in the game with two runs scored, while Thomas was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Lopez suffered the loss in relief of Alex Borofski. He allowed six run, five earned, on three hits and two walks, one intentional, facing six batters in the sixth without recording an out.

Borofski went 5 1/3 innings allowing five runs, all earned, on 11 hits and two walks while striking out two and hitting a batter. Ken DiBucci faced on batter giving up a hit and a run, while Tanner Fitting pitched 2/3 of an inning scoreless.

Clarion returns to action at 2 p.m. Monday when it hosts Slippery Rock in a PSAC West doubleheader.

NOTES — Falk now has a five-game hitting streak and is hitting .362 on the season, the best mark among freshman in the PSAC West. During the current five-game streak, he is hitting .438 (7 of 16) with seven RBIs.
