Barenchik/Wilcox Homer But Softball Drops DH At IUP

rp_primary_Kirsten Wilcox 04INDIANA, Pa. — Despite back-to-back homers from Kirsten Wilcox and Ashley Barenchik to lead off game two, the Clarion University softball team was swept by IUP Wednesday afternoon in Indiana.

Clarion out hit the Crimson Hawks in both contests while dropping the first game 6-2 and game two 9-2.

Errors plagued the Golden Eagles in both ball games as they finished with four in each contest.

In game one, IUP scored five unearned runs off Clarion starting pitcher Lyndsey Jones in her five innings of work. Jones, who recorded the loss, gave up four hits while striking out one. Paige Baker gave up a run and four walks in her one inning of relief in the sixth.

IUP scored three runs in the third and two in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, Wilcox hit a two-out single down the right field line. Barenchik and Christina Tressler followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to cut Crimson Hawk lead to three.

But in the bottom half of the inning, IUP added an insurance run on a wild pitch from Baker for their sixth and final run.

Kirsten Wilcox went 2-for-3 with a run scored to power the Clarion offense. Barenchik, Tressler, and Megan Anderson each had a hit a piece for Clarion for a total of five hits.

Hannah Mercer led the Crimson Hawk offense as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.

Alexa Campbell struck out seven while giving up five hits and two runs in the win.

In the second game, Leadoff hitter Kirsten Wilcox, who had four hits total on the day, hit her team leading third homerun of the season to lead off the night cap. Barenchik followed with her first homer of the season to give the Golden Eagles the early 2-0 advantage.

Shawnna Crago, who started on the bump for Clarion, held IUP (25-13 overall, 18-6 PSAC West) hitless through the first four frames.

IUP knotted the game at 2-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs in the inning, Allison Viguers reached on an error to shortstop Casey Wilcox which could have ended the inning.

The Crimson Hawks got their first hit of the ball game in the bottom of the fifth as they added three more runs to make it 5-2, two of which were unearned.

In the sixth, IUP put the game out of reach when Amanda Spindler hit a grand slam to make it 9-2.

Crago took the loss while going 5.1 innings. She gave up nine runs (five earned), four hits, four walks, and struck out three. Chelsea Zola pitched 0.2 innings in relief for Crago.

Barenchik went 2-for-4 in the game and finished with a total of three hits on the day.

Tara Senn got the win for IUP as she pitched all seven innings while giving up two runs and eight hits.

Clarion falls to 3-24, 2-18 on the season and will return to action Thursday afternoon in a home doubleheader with Gannon beginning at 2:30 p.m.
