M. Edward OsterriedM. Edward Osterried, 93, of Cowell Avenue, Oil City, formerly of South Second Avenue, Clarion, died July 6, 2014, at Oakwood Heights Nursing Home in Oil City where he had resided the last two months due to declining health.

Ed was born July 28, 1920 in Lucinda, PA. He was the son of the late Martin J. and the late Mary E. Reynolds Osterried.

Ed was a 1939 graduate of Clarion High School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 serving all throughout the European Campaign with the rank of Sargent. Ed received the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. Ed was a sharp shooter with rifle and pistol.

Ed married Anastasia C. Snyder of Snydersburg on his bride’s birthday, May 21, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lucinda, PA. Ann passed away on June 19, 2013.

During Ed’s career as a bookkeeper, he worked for numerous Clarion area businesses such as Alexander Men’s Shop, Tri Motor Co. and Laughlin Freas Motor Co. before entering the Army. After returning home, Ed worked for Freas Motor Co., R & H Trucking Corp., George Wolf Pennzoil. Ed retired in 1983 from Selker Bros. Mobil distributor after 23 years.

Ed was also known in the community for setting up bookkeeping systems for numerous businesses as well as doing dozens and dozens of tax returns for many years.

Ed was a member of the Clarion Immaculate Conception Church, the Catholic Knights of St. George. Ed had served as a church usher for 41 years and had been a member of the Board of Directors of the Immaculate Conception Cemetery for over 20 years.

Ed loved his Chryslers and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

After his retirement, Ed and Ann enjoyed bus trips with their friends. Ed and Ann had been members of the Fiddle-A-Round Square Dance Club in Clarion. Of course, his greatest enjoyment was visiting with his family.

Ed is survived by his four children: Thomas E. (Carol) Osterried of Lucinda, Robert J. Osterried (Donna Thornburg) of Clarion, Susann Osterried of Seneca, and Mary E. (David R. Jr.) Cyphert of Oil City. Ed is also survived by ten grandchildren: Dawn Kennison (Clarence Marsh, Kevin Osterried (Julie McGonigle), Matthew Osterried (Bridget Cohlhepp), Robert (Molly) Osterried , Brian (Michelle) Osterried, David Osterried, Jeffrey Shay (Lacey Hotchkiss), Emily Shay, David R. Cyphert, III, and Dylan Cyphert, as well as four great-grandchildren: Zakkery Kennison, Katherine Osterried, Abigail Osterried, and Alayna Osterried.

Ed is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Norma Jean Heinrich of Clarion, Margaret (Peg) Bauer of Crown, Lois Scott of Marienville, Willavene (Whoopie) Snyder of Snydersburg, and Ruth Snyder of Lucinda; and a brother-in-law, David Bowen of Leeper.

In addition to his parents and his wife of 66 years, Ed was also preceded in death by his sister, Anna Mary Osterried; his sisters-in-law, Imelda (Med) Griebel and Phyllis Bowen; and his brothers-in-law, Gerard (Pete) Snyder, Leon Snyder, William (Bill) Snyder, Kenneth (Ken) Snyder, Eugene (Hughie) Snyder, John (Jack) Snyder, and Francis C. Snyder, Jr.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the Robert V. Burns Funeral Home, 638 Wood Street, Clarion.

Military honors will be accorded at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2014, in the funeral home by the American Legion Post 66 of Clarion.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Clarion, with Rev. Charles Schmitt presiding.

Interment will be held in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
