Marian Burkett Mumford

Marian Burkett Mumford, 90, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, July 12, 2014, at Brookville Hospital, in Brookville, Pennsylvania.

Born at home on September 6, 1923, in Home, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Harry Washington and Jemima Susanna Burkett.

Marian graduated from Marion Center High School in 1941, worked at the Sylvania Electric Company in Emporium for two years, attended Feller Cosmetology School in Oil City, graduated and worked as a beautician at the Lavender Shop in Punxsutawney, then, in 1945, moved to Brookville to work at another Sylvania plant.

She married Dick Mumford, the man who stole her heart at the Brookville skating rink, on August 9, 1948, in Plumville. He preceded her in death on February 4, 1998.

In 1968, Marian began a 25 year career at Dollar General, from where she retired.

Marian was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church for 65 years. She played the piano for 58 years.

Survivors include two sons, John Mumford and wife Katrina of Clarion, and Ed Mumford of Brookville; and one daughter, Kathy Mumford Wurtzer and husband John of Washington, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Andrew (Jenny) Mumford, Jenni (Barry) Irving, Abbey (Scott) Lee, Katie Wurtzer and Kelly Wurtzer; and eight great-grandchildren, Olivia and Jack Mumford; Griffin, Devin and Brennan Irving; and Mollie, Grace and Sophie Lee.

In addition to her husband and parents, Marian was preceded in death by brothers Harold Burkett, and infant brother Hughie; sisters Martha Foltz, Marjorie Manners, Margaret Botsford, Mary Dick, and Marcella Simpson.

Visitation will be held at McKinney Funeral Home in Brookville on Monday, July 14, from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 15, at 11:00 a.m. at McKinney, with Reverend Gary Sheesley presiding. A luncheon will follow at Zion United Methodist Church.

Marian will be laid to rest at the Zion Cemetery on Sigel Road.
