Driver Falls Asleep, Car Slams into Tree on Route 948

HOWE TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EYT) — Marienville-based State Police say around 5:54 p.m. on July 30, a one-car accident occurred on State Route 948, in Howe Township, Forest County.

According to police, 41-year-old Curtis L. Whelpley, of Penfield, was traveling north on SR 948 and fell asleep while negotiating a left curve in the roadway.

Subsequently, his 1998 Ford Escort struck a tree off the west side of the road.

Whelpley was not using a seat belt and suffered moderate injuries.

Sheffield EMS transported him to Kane Hospital.

He was charged with a traffic violation.

Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department/Fire Police and Sheffield EMS assisted at the scene.
