James (Jim) Lewis Gathers

1369291_profile_pic (1)James (Jim) Lewis Gathers, 85, of Clarion, PA passed away peacefully Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Shippenville, PA.

Born on May 22, 1929, in Clarion, he was the son of the late Samuel and Edith (Lant) Gathers.

He was a decorated combat veteran in the U.S. Navy, serving on the carrier U.S.S. Leyte during the Korean War. Jim enjoyed the outdoors, camping, square dancing and travel. He retired from Owens Illinois in 1992, to focus on hunting, golf, woodworking, bowling and pie.

Jim is survived by his children Jean Smith and Don Gathers, his son-in-law Gregg Smith, his grandchildren Jordon and Cierra Gathers and his sisters-in-law Joan Peters and Martha Burris. He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Edith Gathers, his wife Emma Jean Gathers and his sister Doris Agostinelli-Goheen.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Clarion Hospital for their care and compassion during Jim’s many visits.

A celebration of life will be held at the First Baptist Church, 7th and Main Street in Clarion, PA on August 6th at 3:00pm. A visitation with Jim’s family will be held just prior, from 2-3pm. Military honors will be accorded by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 66, Clarion at 2:45pm.
