CLARINGTON, Pa. (EYT) – An 81-year-old Clarington woman is out nearly $4000 after falling victim to a telephone scam.

Marienville-based State Police say the incident occurred when an unknown male contacted an 81-year-old Clarington woman via telephone on August 14 and stated that he was her grandson and was arrested in Peru.

Police say the caller advised the victim that he needed money to secure bail and a plane ticket.

The victim believed that the male on the phone was her grandson and sent two $1000 Western Union money orders to the male.

On August 15, the victim sent two additional Western Union money orders to the male, in the amounts of $1000 and $950.

The Victim then discovered that her grandson had never been to Peru and that she was scammed out of a total of $3974.
