34480734_123633652388Walter Wright Greenland, Sr. was a resident of Clarion County who fought in the “Battle of Antietam” during Civil War as a member of the 125th Regiment of the PA Volunteers.

Born: Jan. 6, 1846, in Cassville, Pa.

Died: March 23, 1895, in Clarion, Pa.

Regiment: Company C of the 125th Regiment of the PA Volunteers during the Civil War

Branch: Pennsylvania National Guard

Joined the service in (year):  1861

1861 — During the Civil War, Greenland enlisted in Company D of the 5th PA Reserve Corps on June 15, 1861. He was mustered into service at Harrisburg, Pa., however, he was discharged by Governor Curtin because of his age (15 years) at the time of his enlistment.

Greenland enlisted again later and mustered into service as a “Private” in Company C of the 125th Regiment of the PA Volunteers.

1862 — He fought at the Battle of Antietam, carrying the flag as “Color Sergeant” after two prior Color Sergeants had been shot down. He was wounded in the left ankle on September 17, 1862, but survived his injury.

1865 — After the Civil War, Greenland moved to Clarion County in 1865 and worked in the oil business, managing several oil companies.

1871 — He returned to Clarion County in 1871 after moving for a brief period to Atison, NJ.

1880 — He was widely known for his connection with the Pennsylvania National Guard. He entered the guard as a “Private” of Co. G, 16th Regiment on February 7, 1880. Greenland progressed through the ranks and ended up becoming “Adjutant-General” on March 8, 1892.

1892 — Greenland served as a representative to Governor Pattison during the Homestead Steel riots in 1892. He successfully called out the National Guard within 24 hours and mobilized them to put down the riots.

1895 — Greenland died at his home in Clarion, Pa., of valvular disease of the heart.
