floyd-heffernan-obituaryFloyd A. Heffernan, 85, of Polk, joined our Lord and Savior at 10:35 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2014 peacefully in his home.

A son of William and Lela McCamey Heffernan he was born in Franklin on February 25, 1929. A 1946 graduate of Rocky Grove High School, “Heff” excelled in basketball.

Following graduation Floyd worked at McElhaney’s Greenhouse until joining the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon returning home he owned and operated the greenhouse. In 1970 he became foreman at Two Mile Run County Park. After a brief move he returned to work for the county in maintenance.

Floyd was a lifetime member at Grace United Methodist Church of Rocky Grove. He taught Sunday school for 45 plus years, served as lay leader, and was a solid presence in his church.
Floyd enjoyed gardening, hunting, golfing, bowling, and pitching horseshoes. When not participating himself he could be found at his children’s and later his grandchildren’s athletic and artistic events. As a long time cancer survivor he supported others at Relay for Life being a member of the “Big R.A.C.S .and B.R.A.S” team.

On July 1, 1952 he married the former Betty O’Brien in Albuquerque, NM. She survives along with a son Mike Heffernan, a daughter Jan Hartman, and a daughter-in-law Kim Heffernan all of Franklin, 7 grandchildren, Shawna (Brad) Leighty of Washington, PA, Lindsey Heffernan of Morrisdale, Justin (Jen) Heffernan of Franklin, Tom (Carly) Heffernan of Jeannette, Matthew Cook of Franklin, Morgan Hartman of Franklin and Stephen Hartman of Nashville, TN, 3 step- grandchildren Nikki, Mike and Mark and their families, 5 great-grandchildren Eden and Jewel Leighty, Riley and Mason Heffernan and Brenden Cook. Completing his family are his sister Garnet (Dick) Mihleder, a brother Darrell Heffernan, a sister-in-law, Leona Heffernan and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Joe, infant great grandson Joshua Lane Leighty, a sister Norma Bunce, two brothers Walton “Bud” Heffernan and Dale Heffernan, and a daughter-in-law Linda Heffernan.

Huff Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. 312 W. Park St. Franklin has been entrusted with his funeral arrangements.

Friends will be received in the Grace United Methodist Church of Rocky Grove, 350 Front St., Franklin from 11 am until 1 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held in the church at 1 pm with the pastor Rev. Ed Gresick, officiating. The V.E.T.S. Honor Guard will render military honors.

Interment will be made in Lamey Cemetery at a later date.
