ThumbnailWilliam E McCarren, 89, of Franklin, passed away at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10th, at his residence.

Born July 24, 1925 in Butler, William was the son of the late William L. and Annie McGrady McCarren. He married Lenora May Sprowls Haupt on November 3, 1973, and she preceded him in death on June 28, 1998.

William was a WWII Army Air Force Veteran, having served from November 11, 1943 until April 12, 1946. While serving in the military, he was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, and the WWII Victory Ribbon. William retired from CPT in 1984 where he worked as a pipefitter for more than 33 years.

He was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, and a member of the Catholic War Veterans. He enjoyed hunting and actively played golf throughout his later years (during the year he turned 85, William played 89 games of golf). He was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler’s and Pirate’s fan. He also in his earlier years coached Little League and the Connie Mack Baseball League.

William is survived by his two sons, Ed McCarren of Franklin and Fred McCarren of Utica; and his two daughters, Dawn Ward of Utica, and Susan Burger and her husband, Brian, of Cooperstown. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, William was preceded in death by his two brothers, Leo and Dennis McCarren.

Family and friends will be received at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin, on Friday, September 12th from 3 to 7 p.m. Funeral services for William will held at the Funeral Home on Saturday, September 13th at 1:00 p.m,with Deacon Richard Reed, officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Pa Division — PO Box 896, Hershey Pa 17033-0896 and/or to the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard — 411 Ninth Street, Franklin, PA 16323.
