Clarion University Football Defeats Millersville 55-16

Frye icsMILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Clarion scored two td’s within a 22-second span at the end of the first half and turned a 7-0 lead into a 21-0 halftime advantage which propelled the Golden Eagles to a 55-16 PSAC-West victory over Millersville on Saturday afternoon.

Clarion raised its overall record to 1-1, but now 1-0 in the PSAC-West, since the PSAC is now counting crossover games in the divisional records in 2014. Millersville is 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC-East.

Clarion took a quick 7-0 lead when the Golden Eagles drove 43 yards in 2 plays on Clarion’s first possession. QB Darelle Carson hit Eric Frye with a pass for 37 yards to the MU 6, then followed that with a 6-yard td pass in the right corner of the endzone. Scott Ayers boot at 13:40 gave Clarion a 7-0 lead.

Leading 7-0 late in the second quarter, Millersville had a first down deep in its own territory. On first down qb Matt Misley dropped back to pass in the left flat, but Clarion corner Connor Scott jumped the route and picked the pass off at the 15 yard line and returned it 15-yards for a score with 26.9 seconds left before intermission. Clarion led 14-0.

Clarion kicked off down the right sideline, but Millersville muffed the kickoff and Clarion recovered at the Marauder 33. QB Connor Simmons drove the Eagles downfield quickly and hit Mark Nicholas with a 9-yard td pass with only 4 seconds left before intermission, and in 22 seconds, Clarion forged a 21-0 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles made a real statement in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles saw Delrece Williams return the kickoff 37 yards to the Clarion 48, then led the scoring drive on the ground to push the Eagle lead to 28-0. Williams rushed three times for 22 yards, including a 4-yard td burst with 11:26 left in the third.

After a Millersville field goal made it 28-3, Clarion went ahead 35-3 when Bobby Thomas scored on an 8-yard run with 5:49 left in the third. Clarion went 46 yards in 6 plays.

Millersville drew to within 35-6, but the Golden Eagles scored on a Delrece Williams 11 yard run at 13:34; then Matt Lehman blocked a Millersville punt and Eric Frye returned the ball 29 yards for a scoreat 12:08 of the fourth, and Johnnie Martin scored on a 10-yard td run with 8:08 remaining to make the final score Clarion 55 Millersville 16.

Clarion had 357 yards of total offense including 219 rushing and 150 passing. QB Connor Simmons completed 8 of 10 passes for 84 yards and 1 td, while Darelle Carson hit on 5 of 12 aerials for 66 yards and 1 td.

Delrece Williams rushed 15 times for 92 yards and 2 td’s, plus returned 2 kickoffs for 76 yards.

Eric Frye grabbed 6 passes for 96 yards and 1 score, plus scored on a 29-yard punt return.

Millersville gained 284 yards of offense including 125 rushing and 159 passing. Matt Misley connected on 13 of 24 passes for 156 yards and 2 td’s. Malont’a Patterson caught 5 passes for 60 yards and 1 td.

Clarion’s defense was led by All-American Julian Howsare who had 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks and returned a fumble 23 yards. Cory McNamara had 6 hits, while Brandon Short had 1.5 sacks and Kwame Bell 2 tfl’s, 1 sack.

Clarion is back on the road next week when the Golden Eagles travel to Cheyney for a 1pm kickoff.
