Saussol Sets Career Shutout Mark as Soccer Ties Shippensburg

Saussol02SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Laura Saussol became Clarion’s all-time career shutouts leader with a herculean effort in a scoreless draw at Shippensburg in PSAC women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Saussol made 19 saves helping Clarion earn a point despite the Golden Eagles being outshot 36-11 including 19-5 on shots on goal.

“That was arguably her greatest performance of the season,” Clarion’s first-year head coach Sean Esterhuizen. “She was called on to make at least four extraordinary saves from close range during the game and truly earned us a point today.”

Saussol, who was tied with Jenna Kulik (2007-2010) coming into the game with 12 shutouts, earned her 13th by stopping nine shots in the first half, six in the second half, two in the first overtime and two more in the second overtime.

Clarion (2-5-1 overall, 2-5-1 PSAC) didn’t record its first shot on goal until the second half but did have four in the half plus one in the second overtime.

“The game was much more even than you would think looking at the stats,” Esterhuizen said. “We completed 12 strings of three or more passes in the game to their 13 strings, and they had 54 percent time of possession to our 46 percent. So, I thought we played our game plan very well.”

Clarion’s best chance to score may have come midway through the second half when Anna Chamberlin got on the end of a 1-2 combination between McKenzie Sheesley and Maddie Meyers, but Shippensburg keeper Kayla Kennedy, who had five saves in the game, made a great save on the Chamberlin shot according to Esterhuizen.

“Then, with about one minute left in the second overtime, a pass over their defense from Alexa Stubenrauch was narrowly first-time past their upright by McKenzie (Sheesley),” Esterhuizen said.

Clarion, which earned its first road point of the season, returns to action at 2 p.m. Friday at Edinboro.
