Venango County Man Charged in Pittsburgh Homicide

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Sources say a Franklin man, who was lodged in a Pittsburgh halfway house from a DUI charge, has been accused of killing a Pittsburgh man.

In June of 2013, 30-year-old David Umstead, of Franklin, pleaded guilty to Driving Under the Influence in Venango County and was sentenced to two years of imprisonment.

After spending time in other correctional facilities, Umpstead was transferred to Riverside Community Corrections Center, a Pittsburgh halfway house.

Around 9:00 a.m. on August 26, Umstead left Riverside Community Corrections Center to apply for a job and did not return, sources say.

Pennsylvania State Police issued a warrant charging him with escape.

umsteadAccording to a published article in postgazette.com, on August 29, Umstead allegedly stabbed Delrio Ivy in the neck, chest, and arms on August 29 while on the run. He faces one count of Homicide.

On September 9, Carbon County officials arrested Umstead on the escape charge.

He was transported to SCI-Pittsburgh.

In the meantime, Pittsburgh police identified Umstead on surveillance video attacking Ivy.

According to sources, Umstead is allegedly claiming self-defense.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled on October 24 at 8:00 a.m. in Allegheny County Court in front of The Honorable Jeffrey A. Manning.
