Clarion Gridders Loses 30-16 at Seton Hill

newquist_bell_mcnamara_1_icsGREENSBURG, Pa. — Clarion safety Cory McNamara had 2 interceptions, Brandon Short (photo left) had 6 tfl’s and the defense totaled 15 tfl’s but it wasn’t enough as Seton Hill defeated the Golden Eagles 30-16 in a PSAC-West game on Saturday afternoon.

Held at Offut Field, Clarion lost its fourth in a row and dropped to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC-West, while Seton Hill raised its overall record to 2-5 and 2-4 in the PSAC-West.

Seton Hill opened the scoring in the first quarter when Eric Brown caught a 33-yard pass from Drew Jackson for a td. The PAT was kicked into the line, and the deflection was picked up by Clarion safety Jerome Matthews (#42) at around the 10 yard line and returned 90-yards for a defensive two-point conversion. Seton Hill’s lead was cut to 6-2 at 6:13 of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter the Griffins had a first and 10 at the Eagle 14, but the defense saw Matt Shuey post a tfl and Brandon Short a 6-yard sack, and the defense geld on downs.

After the Eagles fumbled a punt and Seton Hill recovered at the Eagles 11, the Clarion defense held and forced J. Boulnemour to kick a 21-yard field goal and SH led 9-2 with 8:41 left before halftime.

Late in the first half, after SH had a first and 0 at the 10, the defense stood tall again. Kwame Bell’s second down sack for a loss of 10 yards was followed by another 10-yard sack from Brandon Short. On fourth down the Eagle rush forced an intentional grounding call and the half ended.

Seton Hill took the second half kickoff and drove 71 yards in 12 plays and scored on a Dan Pietrangelo 10-yard pass to FJ Williams. The PAT gave the Griffins a 16-2 lead.

Williams caught a 30-yard td pass from Pietrangelo at 11:25 of the fourth, and caught a 2-yard td with 7:26 left I the game to take a 30-2 lead.

Clarion scored twice before the game ended. Mike Deitrick caught a 2-yard pass from Connor Simmons and brother Zach Deitrick grabbed the two-point conversion to make it 30-10 with 4:58 left.

Clarion’s offense had 247 yards including 52 rushing and 195 passing. Connor Simmons completed 14 of 26 passes for 195 yards and 2 td’s with 2 interceptions. Delrece Williams rushed for 36 yards on 10 carries, while Matt Lehman caught 3 passes for 91 yards and Mike Deitrick 3 passes for 29 yards and 1 td.

Seton Hill had 385 yards of offense including 177 rushing yards and 124 passing yards. Brandon Stout carried 29 times for 139 yards. Second half qb Dan Pietrangelo completed 13 of 20 passes for 124 yards and 3 td’s. FJ Williams had 6 catches for 66 yards and 3 td’s.

Clarion’s defense as led by Brandon Short who had 11 tackles, 2 sacks and a total of 6 tfl’s for -30 yards. Travis Day made 9 stops and 1 tfl, Julian Howsare 9 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble caused and recovered, and Kwame Bell 7 stops, 1 sack and 2 tfl’s. Cory McNamara had 2 interceptions in the secondary.

Clarion returns to Memorial Stadium next Saturday to host PSAC-West leading California at 1pm.SH
