Mills Gets Win No. 200 as Clarion Women’s Volleyball Blanks Juniata 3-0

Mills05HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Behind strong play from freshman Gabrielle Olson and Taylor Braunagel, the Clarion University women’s volleyball team gave eighth-year head coach Jennifer Mills her 200th career victory, all at Clarion, with a 3-0 win at Juniata Tuesday night.

Olson had 11 kills and hit .688 (11 kills, 0 errors, 16 attempts), while Braunagel had 10 kills to help Clarion to the straight set (25-23, 25-23, 25-19) victory.

“It (the 200 wins) is a nice milestone,” Mills, who is 200-68, “But its more about the program than about me. It’s about the players working hard, not about what I’m doing on the sideline.”

The Golden Eagles (23-2) also got seven kills and two blocks from Abbey Cox, 30 set assists, six digs, two aces, two kills and a block from Laura Subject and 30 digs, five set assists and two aces from Morgan Seybold.

Juniata (21-6), a perennial NCAA Division III powerhouse, was led by Mar-jane Phillips’ 10 kills, while Nakita Gearhart added nine kills. Brittani Young paced the defense with 21 digs with Kelly Reynolds adding 35 set assists.

It was Clarion’s fourth win ever against Juniata but the third time in three years the Golden Eagles have knocked off the Eagles and the fourth time in the past five years Clarion has beaten Juniata.

The first two sets were tight like the scores would indicate.

Clarion trailed 14-9 and 16-13 in the first set before tying the match at 16 on two kills by Ferragonio and single kills by Olson and Subject. The Golden Eagles then continued to roll taking the next three points thanks to a Mattison Thornton service ace, a Cox kill and a Juniata error to go ahead 19-16.

Juniata closed to within one, 20-19, before a couple of Olson kills helped put the first set away.

In the second set, Clarion led 13-11 before a Juniata run put the Eagles ahead 17-14. Juniata still led 19-16, but Clarion rallied to take the next three points to tie the set at 19 on a Braunagel kill.

The Eagles, however, scored the next three points and seemed in firm control of the set with a 22-19 advantage.
Clarion, though, rallied to forge a 23-all tie on an Olson kill and the got a Subject ace and a Braunagel block to take the set 25-23.

The Golden Eagles then jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set and never trailed using an 8-1 run to turn a 15-14 lead into a 23-15 advantage.
Clarion returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it travels to California (Pa.). The Vulcans are the only team to beat the Golden Eagles in PSAC Play this season handing Clarion a 3-0 loss Sept. 27 at Tippin Gym. Clarion is 14-1 in conference play, while California is 12-3, two games back of first place Clarion and a game behind second place Gannon.

The Golden Eagles then head to Seton Hill for a 1 p.m. match Saturday.
