Mary Alice Hovis

ec017efa83101127Mary Alice Hovis, 83, of Clintonville, Pa passed away November 10, 2014 Born March 8, 1931 at Ellwood City, Lawrence County, Pa.

She was the daughter of the late Donald M. McCowin and Lola Luella Asher McCowin. Married to Herbert V. Hovis June 25, 1955, he survives. Mary Alice attended and graduated from the public schools in Ellwood City, then attended and graduated from Geneva College with an elementary education degree and then attended Pitt University to obtain her Master’s Degree, she also had a minor in psychology. Mary Alice was a devoted housewife, mother and grandmother.

She was a elementary teacher at Victory School in Irwin Twp and taught for Franklin School district as a kindergarten teacher. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Clintonville where she was very active within the church. She had been a Sunday school and Bible school teacher for a number of years. Also, the choir director, church organist and pianist for a number of years. She also was a various boards of the church. Mary Alice touched many lives by reaching out to them through her card ministry. She would send get well cards, birthday cards and Christmas cards to different people in the community, sending multiple cards a week to different people in the area just to let me know she was thinking about them.

Surviving are two sons: Donald C. Hovis and wife Shirley L. of Clintonville, Pa. Ronald C. Hovis and wife Beverley D. of Butler, PA. 4 grandchildren: Courtney M. Loflen and her husband Dr. Jason B. Loflen of Erie and Cameron J. Hovis of Clintonville, PA. and Kristy D Titler and her husband Joe A.Titler of Erie and Lori N. Hovis of Butler, PA. Surviving is former daughter in law-Mrs. Darrell “Kimberly D.” Scott Preceded by her parents, one son: Larry J. Hovis -June 9, 1989.

Family will receive friends at the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, 109 Emlenton Street, Clintonville on Thursday from 6-8. A private family service will take place the following day. The family suggest memorial contributions be sent to the Grace United Methodist Church, Franklin Street, Clintonville PA 16372.
