Clarion Wrestlers Host Defending NCAA Champ Penn State Saturday

rp_primary_DARCHACT2CLARION, Pa. – Clarion welcomes wrestling legend and Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson and the four-time defending NCAA Division I National Champion Nittany Lions wrestling team to Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium on Saturday night. Match time is set for 7pm.

On Thursday afternoon approximately 600 general admission tickets were remaining to be sold and are available on line at www.clarionuniversitytickets.com. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door on a first come first serve basis. Ticket booth will open at 5pm. General Admission tickets are $7.

The Clarion – Penn State match will be available on C-93 (WCCR-FM – 92.7) in Clarion and on the internet on Redzonemdia.com with Rich Herman, former head coach Bob Bubb and John Stroup calling the action.

The event is a “WHITE OUT” with all Clarion fans asked to wear white to support the Golden Eagles. 100 free t-shirts will be given away to the first 100 Clarion students with a valid ID who enter Tippin Gymnasium.

“We are looking forward to wrestling Penn State and to the huge crowd we are expecting at Tippin Gym,” said Clarion interim head coach Keith Ferraro, who is in his first year leading the Golden Eagles after two seasons as the first assistant coach.

The Golden Eagles opened the 2014-15 wrestling season hosting the Clarion Open on November 2 with three Clarion wrestlers in Saturday’s lineup earning places including Daniel Sutherland (3rd at 174), Michael Pavasko (4th at 174) and Evan DeLong (4th at 157). Then last Saturday Clarion participated in the Eastern Michigan duals and lost four dual matches to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (19-12), #17 Northwestern (39-6). Central Michigan (34-6) and Northern Illinois (31-7).

Clarion’s lineup on Saturday will include Seth Carr (2-5; R-Fr. McDonald/South Fayette) at 125, Matt Liggett (0-6; Fr. Chardon, Oh.) at 133; John Pezze (1-6; Jr. N. Huntingdon/Norwin) at 141; Sam Sherlock (3-6; Sr. West Mifflin) at 149; Evan DeLong (7-5; Fr. Kane) at 157; Slade Horner (5-5; Jr. Ridgway) at 165; Michael Pavasko (7-4; Jr. Munhall/Steel Valley) at 174; Daniel Sutherland (6-5; Sr. N. Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) at 184, Ryan Darch (6-4; Sr. Batavia, N.Y.) at 197 and Evan Daley (6-4; So. Erie/Fort LeBoeuf) at 285.

Penn State meanwhile opened their 2015 campaign with a dual meet victory over Lehigh, 24-10, on November 9th. Penn State won 7 of 10 bouts with wins registered for Jordan Conaway (1-0) at 125, Jimmy Gulibon (1-0) at 133, Zack Beitz (1-0) at 149, Garett Hammond (7-0) at 165, Matt Brown (1-0) at 174, Morgan McIntosh (1-0) at 197 and Jon Gingrich (1-0) at 285.

Penn State wrestles at Pitt on Friday night before coming to Clarion Saturday night. Ranked #5 in the latest USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll, the Lions starting lineup is expected to have #11 Jordan Conaway (1-0) at 125, #4 Jimmy Gulibon (1-0) at 133, Kade Moss (3-1) or Michael Waters (5-1) at 141, #17 Zack Beitz (1-0) at 149, #12 Dylan Alton (0-0) or Cody Law (4-2) at 157, Garett Hammond (7-0) at 165, #4 Matt Brown (1-0) at 174, Matt McCutcheon (5-2) at 184, #4 Morgan McIntosh (1-0) at 197 and #9 Jon Gingrich (1-0) at 285.

Cael Sanderson, in his 6th year at Penn State, has led the Nittany Lions to four straight NCAA Division I National Championships as well as four straight Big Ten titles. PSU has a dual meet record of 72-10-2 coming into this weekend, and an overall dual meet record of 116-20-2, including three years as head coach at Iowa State.

As a wrestler, Sanderson had a collegiate record of 159-0 (1999-2002) and won four straight NCAA Individual National Championships at Iowa State.

CLARION NOTES: Overall in the series against PSU, Clarion is 4-25-1 since 1960 … Clarion’s last win came in 1981 when the Eagles won 29-10 …. The undefeated 1986 team tied Penn State 21-21 while finishing 17-0-1 under former head coach Bob Bubb ….  Clarion’s record against PSU in the EWL was 4-12-1 – but Penn State moved to the Big Ten following the 1992 season … Since 1987 Clarion has wrestled several close matches, but has lost 18 straight …. Close losses were 22-19 in 1996 and 22-17 in 1999 … Last year Penn State won 43-3 at Rec Hall in the final dual meet of the year for both teams… The last meeting before that was in 2007 and PSU win 47-0 …. Clarion’s next matches are set for Nov. 30 when Clarion travels to Rider (Noon) and also wrestles Penn (2pm)… Next home meet is on Dec. 19 when Clarion hosts Bloomsburg at 7pm.
