Al George

OI1206754092_GeorgephotoAllen Reed “Al” George, age 80, a former Brockway resident, died on Saturday December 6, 2014 at Christ the King Manor in DuBois, Pa.

Born on February 5, 1934 in Sligo, Pa. he was the son of the late Homer and Jennie Reed George. He was married on January 17, 1958 to Nancy Tippin, and she survives and currently is also a resident at Christ the King Manor.

Retiring in 1994, Al had been employed at National Fuel Gas for 42 years. He is a U.S. Army veteran having served from 1956 to 1958 primarily at the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico. Al was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Brockway where he served as an Elder, president of the Sunday School Class, and past president of the Board of Trustees.

He was a member of John M. Read Masonic Lodge #536 in Reynoldsville and was a member of the Coudersport Consistory.

He also belonged to the Brockway Handgunners and the Blue Rock Settlers. Al has been active in organized baseball since he’s been 15 years old.

He played in the Clarion County Hayraker League, Mercer County Pymatuning League, Lawrence County League and the Brockway Federation League. He coached Little League and American Legion Baseball in Brockway for many years.

He was a 3 time participant in the Pittsburgh Pirate Dream League in Bradenton, Florida.

He also was a member of the Pirate Diamond Club. Al operated his own baseball bat factory in his garage workshop on Horizon Drive in Brockway for many years where he manufactured his signature bat the “Bleacher Reacher by George.”

In addition to his wife he is also survived by 2 daughters: Syndria (Edward) Lowe of McDonald, Pa and Crystal (John) Averill of DuBois; three brothers: Harold George of Florida; Francis and Donald George both of Knox, Pa; one sister: Maxine Coast of Goodyear, Arizona and one grandson Ian (Christine) Lowe of Bethlehem, Pa.

He is preceded in death by three sisters Thelma Burns , Evelyn O’Neil and Dorothy Harkins. Family and Friends will be received on Tuesday, December 9 from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. in Brockway, Pa.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 10 at 11:00 A.M. at the Presbyterian Church in Brockway with Rev. Clair Lundberg officiating.

Burial will be in the Clarion Cemetery in Clarion, Pa. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or The Miracle League Association 1506 Klondike Road Suite 105 Conyers, GA 30094.
