Schaffer, Day & Gysegem Lead Eagles at Zippy Invite on Saturday

SchafferAKRON, Ohio — Clarion junior Gabriella Schaffer (Jr. Reading), senior diver Kristin Day (Reynoldsville/DuBois) and senior Emilee Gysegem (Warren, Oh.) had top performances on Saturday night leading the Golden Eagle Women’s Swimming and Diving team to fourth place in team scoring after Day 2 of the Zippy Invitational hosted by Akron University.

Held at the Ocasek Natatorium, Akron leads the team scoring with 1310 points, Marshall is second with 1130, Illinois State is third with 1122, Clarion fourth at 702 points and IUP is in fifth place with 639 points. Ten teams are participating.

Schaffer swam very fast in placing second in the 100 yard backstroke, her specialty. Schaffer swam an NCAA “B” cut time of 55.18.

Day meanwhile placed 2nd in 3 meter diving scoring 290.20 points.

Emilee Gysegem placed 4th in the 400 I.M. swimming and NCAA “B” cut time of 4:29.56.

Also scoring in the pool were Summer Dacheux (Fr. Dover) who was 10th in the 100 backstroke (57.82), Katie Querciagrossa (So. Peoria, Il.) who was 12th in the 100 back (58.74), Katie Gore (Fr. Pgh – Plum) who was 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.22) and Kelsey Slayton (Sr. White Lake, Mi.) who was 14th in the 100 butterfly (58.14).

Clarion divers also scored. Sarah Zerfoss (Jr. Shavertown) was 6th on 3 meter with 246.40 points, Lauren Slayton (Jr. White Lake, Mi.) was 7th on 3 meter with 246.10 points, Caitlyn Kaufman (Jr. Butler) was 11th on 3 meter with 194.30 points, and Noelle Melani (Jr. South Park) was 12th on 3 meter with 192.65 points.

The 200 medley relay team of Gabriella Schaffer, Emilee Gysegem, Kelsey Slayton and Emily Ondrizek (Jr. Gettysburg) placed 5th with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:45.49. The 800 free relay team of Anna McNurlen (Sr. Washington, McGuffey), Emilee Gysegem, Lauren Szoszorek and Katie Querciagrossa were 9th with a time of 7:48.55.
