Philip Olin Barrett

9a213fbabe5f245f[1]Philip Olin Barrett, 82, of Knox passed away Sunday January 18, surrounded by family at his home following at extended illness.

Born February 6, 1932, in Grove City he was the son of Wilford and Laurea Barrett.

On August 15, 1953 Philip married Carole Johnston who survives.

Philip graduated from Shippenville High School and later from the Army Finance School in Fort Ben J. Harrison, Indiana.

He was a tremendous pitcher who in 1950 was drafted by the Detroit Tigers. On January 27, 1953 Philip was drafted by the U.S. Army.

He left the state of Washington in Sept. of 1953 on the U.S.N.S Gen. W.M. Darby for Korea. He spent 17 months in Puson, Korea with the 9th Finance Disbursing Section where he earned the rank of Cpl. He went to Japan twice on R & R where he got to see many interesting things.

After returning from the war he worked for L&R Decorating in Clarion, J&L Supply in Clarion, was an independent oil producer, raised White Face Cattle and helped develop Elk Acres Development. Philip enjoyed fishing and camping at Lake Wilhelm. He adored his children and grand children especially when playing Santa at Christmas. He was a member of the Knox Lions and the Edenburg Lodge #550.

Along with his wife Philip is survived by three children Gregory (Kathleen) Barrett, Brian (Jodi) Barrett, and Lana (Robert) Graham, four grand children Ryan Barrett, Brady Barrett, Derek Graham and Danielle Graham, and a great granddaughter Gracie Lynn Barrett who he got to meet in November. Also surviving are a sister Linda Barrett Greer and two brothers William Barrett and George Terry Barrett.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will received friends from 1 to 3 pm Tuesday, January 20 at the McEntire-Weaver Funeral Home Inc, 504 East Penn Ave, Knox.

Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Tuesday in the funeral home with Pastor Evans, chaplain of the Clarion-Forest VNA officiating.

Interment will follow at the Cedarview Memorial Park in Strattanville.

Knox American Legion Post 720 will perform full military honors.
