Clarion U. Women’s Basketball Resumes Rivalry with Pitt-Johnstown Today at Tippin Gym

Holmes03-CLARION, Pa. — It’ll be a rivalry night at Tippin Gym Wednesday when the Clarion University women’s basketball team welcomes long-time rival Pitt-Johnstown at 5:30 p.m.

It’s the 50th all-time meeting between the teams, who have met every year but five since 1978. Pitt-Johnstown has owned the series winning 37 of the first 49 meetings including a 95-84 win in Johnstown Nov. 19 despite a career-high 30 points for Clarion’s Tania Holmes.

Holmes has become the Golden Eagles top player and ranks eighth in the PSAC in both scoring (14.8 ppg) and steals (2.3 spg) while hitting 2.3 3-pointers per game, the third-best mark in the conference.

Also for Clarion (1-18 overall, 0-14 PSAC West) Delrika Jones-Carey is having a strong season averaging 10.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game including 13.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest in nine games since Dec. 31 including eighth double-digit scoring games.

Pitt-Johnstown is led by a pair of players averaging over 16 points per game.

Kelsey Sleighter leads the way at 16.4 points per contest, while Jasmine Harper adds 16.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Also, Nicole Carman adds 13.7 points and 7.6 rebounds. Harper had 27 points in the first meeting with Clarion, while Sleighter and Carmen each had 10.

Clarion is off this weekend before returning to action Feb. 4 when it hosts Seton Hill.
