Clarion University Wrestlers Visit CSU Friday & Lock Haven Sunday

CLARION, PA. – The Clarion University wrestling team will have a busy weekend coming up as the Golden Eagles travel to Cleveland State on Friday, Jan. 30 for a 7pm matchup at Woodling Gym, then head to Lock Haven on Sunday for a 2pm matchup at Thomas Field House.

The Clarion – Cleveland State match will air locally on WWCH-AM (1300) and the Lock Haven match will be on WCCR-FM (92.7), with both matches on the internet on Redzonemdia.com with Rich Herman and John Stroup calling the action.

Clarion, under head coach Keith Ferraro, enters the match with a 1-11 dual meet record and a 1-3 mark in the EWL against a very tough schedule. On Jan. 18 the Eagles lost to George Mason 29-9, while also losing to EMU on Jan. 10 (34-7) and #28 Ohio U. (42-5) on Jan. 8th. On December 19 Clarion posted its first dual meet victory under coach Ferraro with an exciting 20-19 criteria win over EWL and PSAC rival Bloomsburg at Waldo S. Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles opened the 2014-15 wrestling season hosting the Clarion Open on November 2 with three Clarion wrestlers in Saturday’s lineup earning places including Daniel Sutherland (3rd at 174), Michael Pavasko (4th at 174) and Evan DeLong (4th at 157). On November 15 Clarion participated in the Eastern Michigan duals and lost four dual matches to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (19-12), #19 Northwestern (39-6). Central Michigan (34-6) and Northern Illinois (31-7). Then on November 22, Clarion hosted four-time and defending NCAA D-I National Champion #4 Penn State at Tippin Gym and lost a 44-0 decision in front of 2,875 fans. On November 30 the Golden Eagles traveled to #17 Rider and lost a 38-3 decision to the Broncs and a 25-13 loss to Penn.

Clarion placed 5th at the PSAC Championships on December 6th at Bloomsburg with Evan Daley finishing second and Slade Horner, Mike Pavasko and Ryan Darch finishing third, while losing a week later at #10 ranked Edinboro 32-6.

Chardon, Oh.) at 133; Sam Sherlock (7-13; Sr. West Mifflin) or John Pezze (2-15 ; Jr. N. Huntingdon/Norwin) at 141; Brodie Zacherl (13-16; Fr. Brookville, Pa.) at 149; Evan DeLong (11-17; Fr. Kane) at 157; Kyle Bradock (3-12; Sr. Beaver Falls/Blackhawk) or Slade Horner (12-8; Jr. Ridgway) at 165; Michael Pavasko (16-10; Jr. Munhall/Steel Valley) at 174; Daniel Sutherland (14-14; Sr. N. Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) at 184, Ryan Darch (13-10; Sr. Batavia, N.Y.) at 197 and Evan Daley (11-7; So. Erie/Fort LeBoeuf) or Joshua Davis (5-8; Jr. Freehold, N.J.) at 285.

Cleveland State, led by fifth year head coach Ben Stehura, has the Vikings off to a quality start in 2015 with a 4-2 dual meet record and a 1-2 mark in the EWL. Big wins have come against Indiana (24-13), John Carroll (39-9), Eastern Michigan (20-15) and Lock Haven (18-16). CSU has lost to Edinboro (41-3) and George Mason (19-12).

The Vikings lineup has #15 Ben Willeford (20-7) at 125, Alfredo Grey (11-10) at 133, Mike Carlone (7-7) at 141, Nick Montgomery (5-7) at 149, Latrell Davis (8-6) at 157, Matt Donohoe (14-13) at 165, Gabe Stark (7-10) at 174, Xavier Dye (10-7) at 184, Nick Corba (9-6) at 197 and #15 Riley Shaw (24-4) at 285.

Lock Haven is under the guidance of second year coach Scott Moore. In 2015 the Bald Eagles enter the weekend with a 4-9 overall record and a 1-1 record in the EWL. Lock Haven wins have come against SIUE (24-12), Shippensburg (46-3), Drexel (18-15) and George Mason (31-6). Key losses have been to Ohio U. – (28-12), Eastern Michigan (25-13), Penn (22-9) and Cleveland State (18-16).

The Lock Haven lineup will have Jake Field (17-10) at 125, Ronnie Perry (22-7) or cody Wheeler (13-5) at 133, Bobby Rehm (2-14) at 141, Dan Neff (15-9) at 149, Elias Biddle (18-10) at 157, Aaron McKinney (23-8) or Dillon Gavlock (20-12) at 165, Tyler Wood (16-17) at 174, Fred Garcia (23-4) at 184, Phil Sprenkle (11-6) at 197 and Brad Emerick (11-17) at 285.

CLARION NOTES: Clarion is 25-12 vs Cleveland State in EWL matches and 27-14 overall in the series history … Clarion has a 7 match win streak against the Vikings – winning last year 30-16 and CSU 23-9 two years ago at CSU … The Eagles last lost to CSU in 2007 (44-3) … Clarion is 22-25-2 all-time against LHU, and 17-19-2 in EWL action … Clarion won last year 18-12 in Tippin Gym … And 18-16 two years ago at Lock Haven … In 2012 – Clarion won 19-18 – a few hours after the match actually finished… Tied at 18-18, the dual was originally awarded to Lock Haven in the tie breaker — But a few hours later, after consulting with the NWCA, Clarion was awarded the win in criteria 3 – winning 33-28 on match points… that was also the day that legend Wade Schalles received the PSAC Award of Merit from Commissioner Steve Murray… Lock Haven last defeated Clarion 24-19 in 2011 at LHU …
