Wilferd Allan Sochor

Member_143197Wilferd Allan Sochor, 59, of Oil City, passed away Wednesday afternoon, February 4, 2015 at his home following a battle with cancer.

He was born August 13, 1955 in Canonsburg, the eldest child of the late Wilferd Tanner and Doris (Jones) Sochor. His family later moved to Cochranton.

Allan was a 1973 graduate of Cochranton High School where he was a member of the Future Farmers of America, the square dancing club, and was on their wrestling team.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and trained at Fort Dix in New Jersey. He spent one year at Camp Pelham in South Korea. He was then stationed at Fort Hood in the First Calvary Division until he was discharged from active duty in 1980, and became a recruiter for the U.S. Army Reserves.

In April 1975 he married Dawn Jacobs of Carlton, where they later raised their sons. After leaving inactive duty with the Reserves, he worked at Seco Warwick, and later in the tool and die industry with Precision Manufacturing in Meadville. While raising his sons, Allan was involved in cub scouts as a cub master, and later with boy scouts where he joined his boys on camping, hiking, and white-water rafting trips. He taught his sons to enjoy favorite activities such as fishing and hunting. In 1993 he and Dawn divorced but continued to co-parent their sons.

Allan then married Ellen Elaine McVay of Oil City on May 7, 2013. They honeymooned in Hawaii and enjoyed traveling together, especially on his Goldwing touring motorcycle. They were members of the Franklin V.F.W. and enjoyed spending time with their many grandchildren. Allan formed relationships with his step-children and enjoyed hunting with them. Mr. Sochor was a volunteer at the shepherd’s pantry with St. John Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife Ellen of Oil City; two sons, Steven Sochor and wife Elizabeth of Meadville and David Sochor and wife Ashlie of Cochranton; his grandchildren: Candace, Evan, and Bennett Sochor; his step-children, Amanda Miller, Steve Burgdorfer and wife Julie, Marty Burgdorfer and wife Jodi, Adam Burgdorfer and wife Yolanda; and his step-grandchildren: Dustin, Landon, Destiny, Logan, Kylie, and Sara.

Also surviving are his brothers, Jeffrey, Theodore, Daniel, and Adam Sochor and their families, and two aunts, Mary Richter and Shirley Markle.

In addition to his parents, Wilferd and Doris Sochor, he was preceded in death by his sister, Doreen Sochor; and a half-brother, Kenneth Charles Sochor.

Friends will be received Friday (Feb. 6th) from 5-7 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, Inc., 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township. The V.E.T.S. Honor Guard will accord full military honors at the funeral home at 5:45 p.m. Visitation will continue until the time of the funeral service at 7 p.m., with the Rev. James Irwin, pastor and family-friend, officiating.

Private interment will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville, Washington County.
