Raymond E. Hoover

Member_144382Raymond E. Hoover, 73, of Seneca, passed away March 10, 2015 at his home of natural causes.

He was born August 23, 1941 in Oil City to Virginia (Smerker) Hoover Heckathorn of Oil City and the late Raymond Hoover. He was the step-son of the late Donald Heckathorn.

Raymond was a 1960 graduate of Cranberry High School. He later graduated from both Thiel College and Clarion University with degrees in chemistry and education.

He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1966 through 1968.

Mr. Hoover was active with the former Venango Road Runners club.

Ray enjoyed woodworking and walking in the woods. He was an avid runner and cyclist.

In his earlier years, he was a radio announcer for Oil City’s local radio station. He then worked as an industrial engineer at Oilwell Supply until its closing.

He is survived by his mother, Virginia Hoover Heckathorn of Oil City; three brothers: Richard Hoover (Linda) of York, S. Carolina, John Hoover of Seneca, and Thomas Hoover of Charlotte, N. Carolina; four sisters: Nanette Wilson (Pat) of Rockland, Kathryn Johnson of Oil City and York, S. Carolina, Mary Sweeney (Bruce) of Oil City, and Rita Nolte (Randy) of Oil City; two step sisters, Ann Mathews (Ron) of Cranberry and Donna Douglass (Dan) of California; and a step-brother, Walter “Jake” Heckathorn (Lynn) of Oil City. Numerous nieces, nephews, step-nieces and step-nephews also survive.

In addition to his father, Raymond, and his step-father, Donald, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, with whom he made his home for many years, Andrew and Martha Smerker.

Funeral services will be held privately for the immediate family.

Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens in Cranberry.

The Hile-Best Funeral Home, Inc. in Seneca, Cranberry Township is completing funeral arrangements.
