Shirley A. DeVore

Shirley A. DeVore, 82 of Cochranton died Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at her residence.

She died surrounded by her family. Her children are grateful that she died so peacefully with all of them present and that she was able to remain vital throughout her life. It would be hard to describe how much joy she got from doing things for others.

Born, October 12, 1932 in Sandy Lake, she was the daughter of Byrl and Margaret McCracken Giebner.

She married Robert L. DeVore on March 19, 1955 and he preceded her in death on July 18, 2009.

She graduated from Sandy Lake High School and was a secretary at the Cooper Bessemer Railroad and worked for several years in the cafeteria at the Cochranton High School.

Shirley was an active member of the St. Mark’s United Church of Christ and also served on the Church’s Women’s Guild. She was a member of the Cochranton Women’s Club and volunteered for Crawford County Hospice and the Salvation Army.

When not gardening or cooking, she enjoyed attending the Keeling’s concerts and always appreciated time spent with family and her many friends that she acquired throughout the years.

Survivors include her children, Michele (Mickey) Hjarne and her husband Anders of Larchmont, New York, Doug DeVore of Cochranton and Brenda Shoda of Fort. Mill, South Carolina. Four grandchildren, Emma Hjarne, Danielle Shoda, Christian Shoda and Cameron Shoda. A sister, Barbara Slater of Sandy Lake and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband of 54 years she was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson Devin DeVore and her brother Edwin Giebner.

Friends will be received at the Dickson Family Funeral Home, Inc., 123 S. Franklin St. Cochranton on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9. The funeral and committal service will be 10:00am Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Russell Hines of the St. Mark’s United Church of Christ, officiating.

Interment will be in the Cochranton Cemetery.

The family asks that memorials be made to the St. Mark’s Church.
