PORTERterrymelvinTerry Melvin Porter, 94, a resident of 514 Buffalo Street, Franklin passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 2:30 PM.

He is the last surviving member of his immediate family. Born January 9, 1921 in Franklin; he was the beloved son of George W. and Ruby Greggs Porter, who preceded him in death.

Terry had served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 in the Western Pacific. For service to his country, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Ribbon and the Presidential Unit Citation. Upon his honorable discharge from active duty, he had worked at the former Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company in Franklin, The Talon and General Manifold for 36 years until its closing; and had worked for Burns Security for one more year, until his retirement.

Terry met and married the former Barbara Beers on December 24, 1941. They had six children, who survive: Sandy and her husband Bob Peterson, Kate and her husband Roger Duck, Terry Lee and her husband Ronald Weyand and Melvin Porter, all of Franklin, Mike and his wife Diane Porter of Rocky Grove and Dorothy Guthrie of Cranberry; in addition to 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 6 great step-grandchildren.

Also surviving are two sisters-in-law: Donna Beers of Rockland and Faye Peterson of Franklin; in addition to many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a great grandson: Johnathon Taylor, his sisters: Dorothy, Maude and Evelyn, a nephew: Chuck Dunlap.

In accordance of his wishes, there will be no public visitation.

Private graveside services in Graham Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the members of the V.E.T.S. Funeral Honor Guard of Franklin; will be scheduled at the convenience of his family.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made in his name to your local American Cancer Society.
