Complete Game by Baker Leads Clarion U. Softball to Split with Mercyhurst

CLARION, Pa. — The Clarion University softball team took game two of a doubleheader against Mercyhurst University by the score of 4-1 behind a complete game by Paige Baker.

The Golden Eagles lost the first game of the day by the score of 8-3.
In game one, Christina Tressler led the Golden Eagles with a three-run home run in the third inning to bring the Golden Eagles within one run.

Mercyhurst countered with a six-run 6th inning and Clarion was unable to recover.
In game two, Clarion fell behind early as Mercyhurst’s Alissa Petrosoniak sent a ball over the right-center field fence, putting the Lakers up 1-0.

The Golden Eagles jumped on the Lakers in the next half inning with three singles by Casey Wilcox, Taylor Powell and Carra Stevens, all with two outs. However, Clarion was unable to bring a run home.

Clarion went on to score in the second inning off of a Megan Anderson single that brought Ashley Barenchik across the plate. Barenchik started off the inning with a walk.

The Golden Eagles went on to have a big third inning, offensively, with Wilcox starting the inning out with a double to left field. Lydia Middaugh hit an RBI single with two outs to give Clarion the lead.

Clarion scored its final two runs of the game on a fielder’s choice by Wilcox that brought Anderson and Baker home.

Baker received the win for the Eagles, throwing a complete game while giving up one run on five hits. Baker recorded four strikeouts and gave up one walk.

Clarion (4-18, 3-13) will play host to Indiana University (Pa.) in a PSAC West doubleheader on Tuesday in Clarion.
