Despite Many Hits Clarion U. Softball Swept by Indiana

CLARION, Pa. — The Clarion University softball team was swept by IUP Tuesday afternoon despite hitting 21 hits between the two ball games. Clarion fell 12-4 and 8-1 respectively. With the results the Golden Eagles dropped their record to 4-20 on the campaign. IUP increased their overall record to 11-12 and continue their streak of now eight straight wins.

After Clarion gave up four runs to Indiana in the second inning of game one, Clarion fought back with a run in each of the second and third innings.

Ashley Hummel brought home Taylor Powell in the second on an RBI single, and Casey Wilcox hit into an RBI out which scored Megan Anderson in the third. These runs cut Indiana’s lead in half at 4-2.

Indiana added another run in the fourth inning off of a solo homerun by Hannah Mercer.

Again, Clarion was able to fight the deficit bringing the score back to within two runs after a Shawnna Crago single that brought home Carra Stevens.

Indiana broke open the game with three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and three more in the seventh. Clarion was able to add another run in the bottom of the seventh inning, however it wasn’t enough as Indiana took game one 12-4.

Megan Anderson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in game one for the Golden Eagles. Casey Wilcox finished game one with 2 RBI’s. Pitching duties were split between Lyndsey Jones and Chelsea Zola. Jones went the first four innings and Zola pitched three of them.

As a team the Golden Eagles batted 10-for-30 with the four RBI’s.

Clarion fell to IUP in game two by a final of 8-1. Clarion’s run came off of a Paige Baker infield single to the shortstop in which Baker beat the throw to first. Powell came home on the play.

Clarion trailed 3-1 for most of the game, however Indiana broke the game wide open with a five run seventh inning which included two homeruns.

The Golden Eagles again had offensive numbers batting 11-for-32, however they could not find the ball with runners on base. Clarion finished game two leaving eleven runners on base to end innings.

Paige Baker went 3-for-3 in game two with and RBI. Ashley Barenchik went 2-for-4 while Ashley Hummel went 2-for-3.

Baker pitched 6+ innings for Clarion while Zola recorded the final three outs of the ball game for Clarion.

The Clarion softball team has Wednesday off before traveling to Edinboro University to battle the Fighting Scots at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The Golden Eagles softball team returns home Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Gannon University Golden Knights.
