55429dbb35c6c[1]Dolores A. Fleming, age 81, of Tionesta, PA, passed away on April 29, 2015, at her home in Tionesta.

Mrs. Fleming was born in Great Falls (Black Eagle), Montana, on August 12, 1933, to DeLyle B. Atchison and Amelia Kralich Atchison. After graduating from Great Falls High School in 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, William (Bill) W. Fleming, Jr., and moved with him to Boston where he attended Harvard University. She supported Bill throughout his college and post-graduate career through a variety of jobs, including a position with Kodak.

In 1960, with her husband now Dr. Fleming, she moved to Morgantown, West Virginia, where he joined the Department of Pharmacology at West Virginia University. After giving birth to and while raising three children, she went back to college to complete her own education, first a B.A. in History at West Virginia University (magna cum laude). After earning a Certificate in Decorative Arts from the New York School of Interior Design in 1975, she completed a certificate and an M.A. in History, Public History option, from West Virginia University in 1983.

From 1983 until 2003, she was involved with a variety of historical projects and publications. She was editor, sole author or co-author of 7 books and numerous other publications. Her books include The Ambassadorial Diary of John W. Davis: The Court of St. James 1918-1921, which she co-edited with Davis’ daughter, Julia Davis; Houses and Homes: Exploring Their History, co-authored with Barbara J. Howe, Emory L. Kemp, and Ruth Ann Overbeck; Two Years & Beyond: West Virginia University Two-Year School of Medicine; and Generation of Growth: A Contemporary View of the West Virginia University School of Medicine, co-authored with Jeanne Grimm and Patricia Schumann.

Other research interests involved Friendship Hill, the home of Albert Gallatin, Morgantown’s Historic South Park neighborhood, Sears-Roebuck Mail-Order Homes, and the Seneca Glass Company of Morgantown.

She and Bill traveled the world extensively, which fed her tremendous love of history, geography and culture.

After Bill retired in 2003, they moved to Tionesta, Pa., where one of their daughters reside. At that time she did some restoration/interpretation consultant work with the Jefferson County Historical Society in Brookville, Pa.

Her husband of 62 years, Bill, passed away with her on April 29, 2015. They are survived by their two daughters, Jennifer F. Hitchcock and her husband Mark of Tionesta, Pa., Lisa Foster and her husband Preston of San Antonio, Texas, a son, Dr. David Fleming and his wife Kathleen of Edwardsburg, Michigan. Five grandchildren, Matthew Hitchcock and his girlfriend Angela Vitale of Conway, South Carolina, Christopher Hitchcock and his wife Amy of Pittsburgh, PA, Kara Foster and Paige Foster, both of San Antonio, Texas, and Lincoln Fleming of Michigan. A great-grandson, Owen Hitchcock. In addition she is survived by two brothers, DeLyle “Buddy” Atchison and his wife Dolores of Butte, Montana, David Atchison and his wife Elaine of Pittsburgh, Pa., and a sister, Diane Herigon and her husband Jerry of Belt, Montana.

In addition to her parents she was she was preceded in death by a brother, Darryl F. Atchison, in 1957.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from Noon to 3 PM at the Norman J. Wimer Funeral Home of Tionesta, PA. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Friends of Tionesta Public Library PO Box 127 Tionesta, PA 16353.
