Margaret Schierberl Pomeroy

pomeroyMargaret Schierberl Pomeroy, 85, passed away, peacefully, on Sunday afternoon, May 3, 2015, at the Golden Living Center in Clarion, PA where she had lived for the past four years with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Before the cruel demise of this illness, Margaret resided at 35 Park Avenue, New York City, and spent memorable and cherished summers on Isle au Haut, Maine.

Born on March 4, 1930 in Clarion, she was the daughter of Alfred and Catherine Schierberl.

Margy attended Immaculate Conception School and Clarion Area High School, where she was a star basketball player, and graduated from Mount Mercy College in Pittsburgh, now Carlow University, with a degree in Home Economics.

She moved to NYC in the 1950’s, and scaled the ranks of print journalism to become Editor of the Housewares Division at McCall’s Magazine.

She lived an exciting life in Greenwich Village, where she fell in love with Tony Pomeroy, her upstairs neighbor, a very cool and fascinating archaeologist. They married on January 17, 1976. Tony’s studies took them to colorful places like Taos, New Mexico, Colorado, and British Columbia, before they settled at Tony’s family home in Llewelyn Park, New Jersey, across the street from the Thomas Edison estate.

After Tony’s death, Margy returned to her New York City roots, and lived happily in her beautiful Park Avenue apartment, just a short walk from her brother Bill’s on Fifth Avenue.

She volunteered for many years at The Morgan Library in her neighborhood.

Her summers in Maine at their home on Isle au Haut gave Margy so much joy, with the beaches, the sailing, her garden, the lobsters, the lobstermen, the Miss Lizzie, and her many good friends there.

Margy had a very special new family since marrying Tony Pomeroy. Wendy, his amazing daughter, became very much her own, as well as her husband Deane Rykerson, and her granddaughter, Olivia, who was Margy’s pride and joy. Wendy’s bothers and sister, Tobie, Aron, and Sera, were also very special to her.

She is survived by her brother, in the truest sense, William Schierberl, of New York City, and her sister Mary (Schierberl) O’Toole, of Tionesta, PA, who actually raised Margy after their mother’s death at a young age, many nieces and nephews who adored her, and her best friend, Ellen Lawrence.

In addition to her husband and parents, Margaret is preceded in death by her brothers Robert Schierberl who died in World War II, Alfred Schierberl, Joseph Schierberl, Philip Schierberl, all of Clarion, and her sisters Alice Schierberl, Mother Superior of the Benedictine Sisters of the Diocese of Erie, Luella “Wuddy” Schierberl McLaughlin of Chicago, Illinois, and Carolyn Schierberl Wolf, Clarion PA.

We have lost a remarkably talented, bright, warm, and wonderful lady. Godspeed, Margy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Main St. Clarion on Saturday, June 27, at 10:00 AM, with Fr. Monty Sayers, officiating.

Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory in Clarion. For more information, please visit www.goblefh.net.
