David E. McCarthy

3102224[1]David E. McCarthy, age 97, of Mishawaka, IN passed away Sunday, May 10, at Tanglewood Trace Senior Living Community.

Dave was born December 16, 1917 in Oil City, Pennsylvania, a son of the late John and Carrie (Heil) McCarthy. He married Katherine “Kay” Branigan on August 21, 1943, she passed away in 2003. He grew up in Oil City and was a graduate of Oil City High School. He served his country in the US Army during World War II from 1941 – 1945.

Dave was employed with the Oil Well Division of US Steel for 43 years. Because of his work he lived various places in the Midwest. In retirement he lived in Indiana to be near family and moved to the South Bend / Mishawaka area in 1999.

Dave was an active Catholic during his life and was a current member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka. In retirement he helped provide Mass to nursing home patients. While his children were growing up he enjoyed assisting with Cub Scouts.

In 2004 Dave married Dorothy (Jehnzen) Roberts and she survives in addition to her two daughters Karen (John) Mikesell, Bloomington, IN and Judy (Bob) Schmuhl, South Bend, IN.

Dave was also preceded in death by a son, John B. McCarthy and a son in law, Joseph “Beppi” Rombaldi; and four brothers, Bob, Dick, Bill and Chuck McCarthy and a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Weidle.

Dave is also survived by his six children, David M. (Carol) McCarthy, Lexington, SC, Richard B. (Faye) McCarthy, Cleveland, TN, Mary “Kathy” Rombaldi, Mays Landing, NJ, Maureen (John) Harangody, Munster, IN, Kevin P. (Marianne) McCarthy, Granger, IN; and Tim (Julia) McCarthy, Bloomington, IL; a daughter in law Rose McCarthy, San Rafael, CA, twenty grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am Thursday, May 14, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill Street, Mishawaka, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating.

Visitation will be prior to the Mass from 9:30 – 10:30 am Thursday in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka.

Committal services with military honors will take place 2:30 pm Friday in the Chapel of Calvary Cemetery, Oil City, Pennsylvania, with Rev. Matthew Ruyechan officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawka, IN or Great Lakes Hospice Foundation in Jackson, MI.
