Rick’s Racing Roundup: Fans Anticipate Tri-City Opening Night

SARVER, Pa. (EYT) — Mother Nature stole the headlines over the weekend which was filled with severe storm warnings and flood watches. Unfortunately the wet weather washed out all local racing in the area.

Area tracks and fans will be hoping for better weather this weekend as racing resumes highlighted by a big opening night at Tri-City Raceway Park.

After the original opening night in May (which was slated to feature the BRP modified tour) fell victim to rain Tri-City will look to get their season going this Sunday, June 21st. This Sunday fans can look forward to a full show headlined by the 410 Sprint Cars.

A strong field of local sprint cars is excepted as they will convene for a 2,000 to win feature. It will be the first appearance of the winged warriors at the track since 2011 when the now defunct Midwest All-Star Series visited the Franklin oval. Andy Mckisson of Strattanville was the winner of the feature that night taking home the 3,000 dollar payday.

Also on the card Saturday will be the 305 sprint cars, the Bill Emig Memorial for RUSH crate late models, the Penn-Ohio pro- stock car series along with the e-mods making for a full night of racing. Gates will open at 4pm with action getting underway at 6pm Sunday.

Lernerville Speedway will also be back in action Friday with another Fab 4 show and it will also be mid-season championship night. Mercer Raceway Park will also feature mid-season championship on Saturday featuring their regular six divisions.

Sharon Speedway will also look to get back in action this Saturday with a regular show featuring the big block modifieds. Then on Tuesday June 23rd Tony Stewart’s All-Star Circuit of Champions will invade the Hartford oval for the fifth night of Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

This year’s edition of Speedweek will feature nine straight nights of racing at eight different Ohio tracks. It will also be sponsored by Cometic Gasket and will pay out nearly 250,000 dollars in prize money for the grueling week of racing. There is also a 25,000 dollar bonus for any driver that can win five of the nine races.

Brandon Matus was the last driver to win a Speedweek show at Sharon Speedway. Brandon’s came in 2012 with rain wiping out the show the past two years. All-Star point leader Dale Blaney will be looking for victory at his home track. A strong field of cars is expected all week for the 33rd annual edition of Speedweek.
