Mary Ellen “M.E.” Ross

Mary Ellen “M.E.” Ross, 81, a resident of Sena Kean Manor in Smethport, formerly of Kane and Hackettstown, N.J., died Tuesday evening, June 23, 2015 at UPMC Hamot in Erie.

Born September 11, 1933 in Kane, she was the daughter of Alan and Agnes Benson Ross.

After graduating from Kane High School, she obtained her B.S. from Slippery Rock College in 1959 and received her Masters from Penn State Univ. in 1967. She worked for Easter Seals for over 33 years; retiring from Camp Merry Heart in Hackettstown, N.J. as its director. She then returned to her homestead in Kane to enjoy her retirement at the “farm” on Wetmore Road.

“M.E.” was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kane, the Wildcat Park Auxiliary in Ludlow, where she had served as president, the Ludlow Fire Vol. Dept. Ladies Auxiliary and the Mountain Grange #1307 in Kane.

Surviving are a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Faes of Crosby and two brothers, Lawrence “Larry” Ross of Mt. Jewett and Charles Ross of Norton, Kan. While she had no children, she was a mother to her many nieces and nephews, including Dede Latimer of Warren, with whom she shared a special bond; her godson Kai VanBodegom-Smith of San Diego, whom she loved as her own; and her dear friend from Camp Merry Heart, Mary Simpson of Hackettstown.

She was preceded in death, besides her parents, by her special friend and travel buddy, Minnie Keener of Ludlow.

Friends may call at the First Baptist Church in Kane on Friday from 10:00 until 11:00, at which time a service will be held there with the rev. Bruce Kumher, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Gibbs Hill Cemetery, Ludlow.
