The game starts at 7pm and Vuckovich will be in attendance at the game and throw out the first pitch.
The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a Pete Vuckovich bobblehead – sponsored by Clarion University. Vuckovich, a native of Johnstown and a 1970 grad of Conemaugh Valley High, played at Clarion for four seasons (1971-74) under then head coach Joe Knowles. Also a talented infielder and hitter, Vuckovich was also an All PSAC second baseman in 1971 and first team ALL-PSAC as a pitcher from 1972-74. An NAIA All-American in 1974, he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 1974 in the 48th round and made his major league debut on August 3, 1975 in Chicago.
Pete was with the White Sox in 1975 and 76, was drafted by Toronto in the expansion draft and spent 1977 with the Blue Jays. He was traded to St. Louis and spent three seasons with the Cardinals posted a 2.55 ERA in 1978 (3rd lowest in NL) and was fourth in shutouts in the NL with 3 in 1980. In December of 1980 he was traded with Rollie Fingers and Ted Simmons to Milwaukee. He led the American League in wins with 14 in 1981, and won the Cy Young in 1982 going 18-6 with a 3.34 ERA. The Brewers won the AL Pennant in 1982 and lost to the Cardinals in the 1982 World Series.
In eleven seasons Vuckovich posted a career record of 93-69 with 882 strikeouts and a 3.66 ERA in 1455.1 innings. Vuckovich worked for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1992 – 2011, including a stint as the Pirates Pitching coach in the 1997 – 2000 seasons. Since 2012 he has been a special Assistant to the General Manager (Jack Zduriencik) … Pete played “Clu Haywood” — Yankees Slugger – in the movie major league.
Pete was inducted into the Clarion University Sports Hall of Fame in its inaugural year, 1989, and also inducted into the Western Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Sports Halls of Fame.
CLARION NOTES: Pete and wife Anna have three children including Louis, Pete Jr., and Damian. Pete Jr. is a 2004 Clarion grad, played at Clarion and like his father, was also drafted in 2004 by the Chicago White Sox… He was a catcher.
ALTOONA, Pa. – Peter Vuckovich, former Clarion pitching standout from 1971-74 — the 1982 American League Cy Young Award winner and currently Special Assistant to the General Manager for the Seattle Mariners — is being honored with a special night by the Pittsburgh Pirates Altoona Curve (Class AA) on Friday, August 7, at People Natural Gas Field in Altoona.
