Burwell, KathrynMrs. Kay Burwell, of Charlotte, NC; formerly of Clintonville, age 92, died peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2015. Mrs. Burwell was a resident of Southminster Retirement Community.

Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, on April 25, 1923, Mrs. Burwell was the daughter of Lester C. Hamilton and Mary S. Hamilton of Venango County, Pennsylvania where she spent most of her youth.

Her ancestors were some of the areas earliest settlers in that region and were pioneers in early oil production there. She graduated from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, New York majoring in Elementary Education. After graduating from college, she taught kindergarten at Myers Park Methodist Church, beginning in 1945. In 1946, she met and married the love of her life, Armistead Burwell, of Charlotte, NC who had just returned from duty as a Naval Officer in World War II.

During her years in Charlotte, Mrs. Burwell was a homemaker and a dedicated member and Sunday school teacher at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. She was an active member of the Junior League of Charlotte and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She liked to say, however, that “her main accomplishment was raising four children”. She will be remembered as a committed and sincere Christian, wife and mother.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burwell was preceded in death by her husband in 2004.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Kay Scarborough and her husband Paul, of Charlotte, NC and three sons, Armistead Burwell Jr and his wife Linda of Raleigh, NC, William Hamilton Burwell, and his wife Traci, of Franklin, PA and John Rhyne Burwell, and his wife Martha of Greer, SC; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend her graveside funeral services on Saturday at 11AM at the family lot in the Clintonville Methodist Cemetery.
