A quick look at what is going on in the regional sports scene.

  • The Pirates were defeated by the Colorado Rockies, 9-3 yesterday. Pirates’ starter Paul Maholm struggled, giving up 8 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
  • The Steelers have signed five-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Flozell Adams. Adams, 35, will help fill the void that was left when starting right tackle Willie Colon was lost for the season with an Achilles injury.
  • Rookie linebacker Jason Worilds agreed to terms on a four year contract with the Steelers. Worilds was Pittsburgh’s second round pick in the 2010 NFL draft.
  • Matt Pawlikowski of The Examiner (Washington, DC) takes a look at one of the more intriguing position battles that will take place during Steelers training camp.
  • The Pirates will head to St. Louis for a three game series against the Cardinals. St. Louis has lost five of their last seven games.
  • Kevin Newsome and Matt McGloin will battle for the starting quarterback spot at Penn State. A decision on who starts isn’t expected until “a week or so before” Penn State’s first game on September 4th against Youngstown State.
  • Pitt has landed another top recruit. Terrell Chestnut, ranked the # 54 athlete by Scouts Inc., gave the good news to Dave Wannstedt and his staff yesterday. This comes just one day after Pitt landed prized running back recruit Jameel Poteat.
  • Penn State recruit Michael Cole, a safety out of Virginia, will decide between the Nittany Lions and Virginia Tech tomorrow. Cole also received offers from Duke, Virginia, and Maryland.
